Homelessness in Toronto

In Toronto:

  • Estimated number of homeless people sleeping outdoors and in emergency shelters is over 5,000 and steadily on the increase
  • Two-thirds of people experiencing chronic homelessness also live with a serious mental illness
  • Over 14,000 people are waiting on the centralized waiting list for supportive housing. 52% of these individuals have no fixed address and live with a persistent and serious mental illness
  • Shelter occupancy rates have been consistently over the capacity rate of 90%
